Black and dark bathrooms – photos and ideas
Dark bathrooms in black, anthracite and graphite tones look bold and luxurious. However, they need plenty of light, and you can use dark colour on just one wall. Below you will find how to achieve this, along with photos of collections in dark tones.
How to create a black and dark bathroom
A dark bathroom is a bold choice that pays off – it feels like a hotel spa. It works best in a larger bathroom or one with a window. In a smaller space, apply dark colour to one wall or the floor and keep the rest light.
- Light: plan for multiple sources – ceiling light, light by the mirror and indirect LED lighting in the niche or furniture. Dark surfaces absorb light.
- Surface: limescale and soap are visible on matte dark tiles, while fingerprints show on glossy ones. Use a squeegee after use.
- Contrast: white sanitary ware, light wood or gold and brass accessories will enliven the dark bathroom.
- Dark stone and marble: black veined marble or anthracite stone looks more luxurious than solid black.
You don't have to have black on the tiles – black profiles of the shower enclosure, taps and mirror frame on a light background will suffice. To avoid overcrowding the bathroom, keep black to one type of element and in one shade. You can plan the light according to the article Bathroom Lighting, while black accessories are inspired by articles Shower Enclosures with Black Profiles and Black and Coloured Bathtubs. We compare tile colours in the article Bathroom Tile Colours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a dark bathroom fit in a small flat?
Yes, if only one wall or the floor is dark and the rest is light. A completely dark small bathroom needs a lot of light; otherwise, it feels cramped.
Is a black bathroom hard to maintain?
More than light ones. On dark matte surfaces, limescale and soap are visible, while on glossy surfaces, fingerprints show. A squeegee after showering and regular cleaning helps.
What light does a dark bathroom need?
More light sources: ceiling lights, lights by the mirror and indirect LED lighting in the niche or furniture. Dark surfaces absorb light.
What to combine with black tiles?
With white sanitary ware, light wood, veined marble or with gold and brass accessories that will enliven the dark bathroom.
