Bathroom inspirations

Bathroom – inspirations and photos by style, colour and size

You can find inspiration for your bathroom fastest in three steps: choose a style, such as travertine, marble, or concrete, then the colour of the walls and floor, and finally, look at bathrooms of similar size and type – small bathroom, WC, attic, or bathroom with a bathtub. This is exactly how we have sorted our visualisations and collections of tiles on this page, always with a link to detailed advice.

Finding inspiration for your bathroom is easy today, but choosing is harder. There are thousands of photos on social media, but most show spacious bathrooms with garden views, which have little in common with a 2 × 2 m apartment bathroom. That's why we have organised our photos as bathrooms are actually planned: first style, then colour, and finally size and type of room.

The visualisations on this page were prepared in the TGB studio with tiles from specific manufacturers, so you can view or purchase each series in person. Click on the photo to open the entire series with additional colours and formats. Save the photos you like with a heart among favourites – when you come to the studio, we will have a starting point.

How to find inspiration for your bathroom

  1. Save 5 to 10 photos that you like. Don’t think about the price or whether it will fit yet. The common denominator of the photos – warm wood, light stone or black details – is your style.
  2. Select the colour of the walls and floor. Light walls will visually enlarge a small bathroom, while a darker floor will ground it. If in doubt, start with a neutral colour and use a bolder shade on just one wall.
  3. Look at bathrooms of similar size. A solution from a 4 × 4 m bathroom will not work in a flat. For a small bathroom, WC or attic, look for photos with a similar layout.
  4. Check it out with your own dimensions. In 3D bathroom planner, you can enter your measurements, arrange the sanitary ware, and choose tiles – for free and without registration.

The style of the bathroom is primarily determined by the tiles and flooring, as they cover the largest area. Click on a style to view collections of tiles and flooring from manufacturers along with tips on how to combine them. If you can't decide between stone, wood, and concrete effects, a comparison in the article Imitations of travertine, marble, wood, and concrete will help. What's currently trending can be found on the Trends page.

Bathrooms by colour

Colour determines whether a bathroom feels larger, warmer, or more festive. When choosing, consider the light: warm white LED light (around 3,000 K) will highlight beige and wooden tones, while cool light will enhance grey and concrete. Therefore, check samples in the light you will have at home. We discuss colours in detail in the article Bathroom tile colours.

White bathroom

White is the safest choice for a small bathroom or one without a window, as it reflects light. To avoid a sterile feel, choose a warm shade of white, a matte finish for the floor, and complement it with wood or metallic details. Check out the style white and bright bathrooms.

Grey bathroom

Grey feels modern and is practical – light grey tiles show less water and dust than white. Warm grey tones (greige) pair well with wood, while cool tones complement black accessories. Inspiration with a concrete look can be found in the style concrete and cement.

Black and anthracite bathroom

Dark walls or floors feel luxurious but require more light. In a smaller bathroom, apply dark colour to just one wall or the floor, leaving the rest light. Ideas can be found in the style black and dark bathrooms.

Green is making a comeback – from dark forest to sage. It suits one wall, a niche, or as a backsplash behind the sink. It looks great with wood, white sanitary ware, and brass accessories.

Brown and wooden tones bring warmth to the bathroom. The most practical is wood-effect tiles, which can also be used in the shower. Check out the style wood effect.

Bathrooms by size and type

Photos of bathrooms similar in size and layout to yours will be most helpful. For each type, you will find two visualisations and a link to an article with dimensions and solutions.

Small bathroom

In a small bathroom, the rule is: light large format tiles on the floor and walls, a shower cubicle with clear glass instead of a bath, a wall-hung toilet, and a vanity unit with a width of 50 to 60 cm. A large mirror will visually double the space. Ideas and dimensions can be found in the articles Small bathroom and Small bathroom with shower cubicle.

Bathroom in an apartment

Apartment bathrooms tend to be narrow and windowless, so every centimetre counts: sliding shower doors, a niche instead of shelves, and custom furniture. If you have a prefabricated core, check out the page Bathroom in a panel building.

WC

In the WC, you can afford to be bolder than in the bathroom – a striking tile, dark colour, or a decorative feature behind the WC. We describe how high to tile and what sink to choose in the articles WC Tiling and Small Sink for WC.

Bathroom in the attic

Under the sloping roof, a bath or a lower shower area fits, while the sink and WC should be placed where you can stand upright. Wooden tiles and light walls will make the attic feel cozier. More in the article Bathroom in the attic.

Bathroom without a window

Without natural light, layered lighting, light colours, and good ventilation are crucial. A backlit niche or mirror adds depth to the bathroom. Tips can be found in the article Bathroom without a window.

Bathroom with a bath

A built-in bath tiled with the same tiles as the walls creates a calm effect, while a freestanding bath stands out in a larger room. If you also shower in the bath, choose a bath screen. We describe dimensions and materials in the article Choosing a Bath for the Bathroom, and solutions for smaller spaces in the article Small Bathroom with Bath and Shower.

Walk-in shower

A shower without a tray, featuring a drain and clear frameless glass, is the most distinctive feature of a modern bathroom. The floor is level, making the bathroom feel larger. Dimensions, glass, and drainage can be found in the article Walk-in Shower.

Bathroom design: what makes a bathroom beautiful

The most beautiful bathrooms have nothing extra. They follow a few simple rules that work in a small flat as well as in a large house. What makes a bathroom luxurious without unnecessary spending is described in the article Luxury bathroom.

  • Two to three materials. For example, stone on the walls, wood on the floor, and one metal for the fittings. More materials will clutter the bathroom.
  • Large format and few joints. Tiles 60 × 120 cm and larger create calm surfaces and are easier to clean. An overview of formats can be found in the article Tile and floor formats.
  • One striking element. An accent wall, freestanding bath, or coloured tap – but only one. Let the others remain in the background.
  • Light in layers. Ceiling light, light by the mirror, and illuminated niche. How to achieve this is described in the article Bathroom lighting.
  • Hidden storage space. Wall-mounted furniture, a niche in the wall, and a custom cabinet will keep things tidy. Tips can be found in the article Bathroom cabinet.
  • One colour of metal. Taps, shower profiles, handles, and accessories in the same colour – chrome, matte black, or gold. We compare profile colours in the article Showers with black profiles.

Retro and country bathroom

A retro bathroom features patterned tiles on the floor, metro tiles on the walls, a clawfoot bath, and taps with cross handles. To avoid a museum-like feel, combine one retro element with a modern large format. A country bathroom relies on wood, stone, and warm colours, complemented by a ceramic sink and linen textiles. Inspirations can be found in the styles patterns and decors, wood imitation, and stone.

Accessories, textiles, and doors for the bathroom

Accessories complete the bathroom style and can be changed in minutes. A simple rule helps in their selection: metal accessories in the same colour as the taps, textiles in the colour of the furniture or wood.

Bathroom accessories in one colour – hooks, towel holder, soap dispenser, and mat in front of the bath
Illustrative image: accessories in one colour as the tap – towel holder, hooks, and soap dispenser, washed mat in front of the bath
  • Rug and mat for the bathroom: choose a mat with a non-slip underside that can be washed. A absorbent mat belongs in front of the shower or bath; in a small bathroom, one larger mat is preferable to two small ones.
  • Shower curtain and rod: for a bath without a screen. A telescopic rod can be wedged between two walls without drilling, making it ideal for a niche. The curtain should reach inside the bath to allow water to flow back.
  • Hooks, holders, and soap dispenser: choose them from one series so that they match in shape and colour.
  • Organisers, shelves, and stool: organisers will solve small items, but larger items belong in a cabinet or niche planned during the design. A stool is suitable for a larger bathroom; for a shower for seniors, a folding seat is preferable.
  • Stickers and decorations: a quick change without demolition. If you dislike the old tiles, check out the articles Tile paint and Bathroom renovation without demolition.
  • Bathroom doors: solid or with frosted glass. In a small bathroom, sliding doors into a construction pocket save space. Also consider ventilation – air needs a path through a grille or gap under the door; more in the article Bathroom fan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find bathroom inspirations?

On this page, you will find photos of bathrooms sorted by style, colour, size, and type – from small bathrooms and WCs to attics and bathrooms with bathtubs. You can find more series in completed visualisations, and you can design your own bathroom for free using the 3D bathroom planner.

What bathroom style is timeless?

Light neutral tones, large formats with minimal joints, and the appearance of stone, concrete, or wood. Just two to three materials are enough; use a trendy colour or decor as an accent on one wall.

What colour is best for a small bathroom?

Light – warm white, beige, or light grey, ideally the same tiles on the floor and walls. Use dark colour only on one wall or on the floor.

How to match accessories with the bathroom?

Choose metal accessories in the same colour as the taps and shower profiles, textiles in the colour of the furniture or wood. Hooks, holders, and soap dispensers from the same series match in shape and colour.

What doors are best for a bathroom?

Solid or frosted glass. Sliding doors into a building pocket are suitable for small bathrooms, as they do not take up space when opening. Air needs a path for ventilation through a grille or gap under the door.

Can the inspiration from the photo be adapted to my bathroom?

Yes. In the 3D bathroom planner, you enter your dimensions and select tiles and sanitary ware. We will prepare a photorealistic visualisation tailored to you in the studio – free with the purchase of goods, and we will deduct the deposit of 70 € from the purchase price.

Are the photos on this page real bathrooms?

These are visualisations we prepared in the TGB studio with tiles from specific manufacturers, and photographs of collections from manufacturers. The tiles and flooring can be purchased. Real transformations of bathrooms are gradually added to the page Transformations of bathrooms.
