Kitchen sink: granite, stainless steel or ceramic

The stainless steel sink is the cheapest, light and can withstand a hot pot, but scratches and limescale are visible on it. The granite sink made of quartz sand and resin is quiet, stain and heat resistant, and is the most commonly chosen. The ceramic sink has the most scratch-resistant surface and looks luxurious, but it is heavy and more expensive. Before buying, measure the width of the cabinet under the sink and decide whether to install the sink from above, under the counter or flush with the worktop.

The sink is the most used area in the kitchen. Pots fall into it, hot water sits in it, potatoes and coffee makers are cleaned in it. Therefore, the material and installation method matter more than the shape. On vkupelni.sk, there are nearly 500 products in the kitchen sink category, and most of them are granite – 347 granite, 110 stainless steel and 26 ceramic (November 2026). In the article, we will compare all three materials, installation methods, sizes and prices.

Stainless steel sink is the cheapest and lightest. A hot pot won't damage it and it's easy to clean. However, scratches and water droplets are visible on the glossy surface. If you want stainless steel, choose a finely textured or matte finish – small scratches won't stand out as much. Stainless steel is also the loudest when water flows into it or cutlery falls in.

Granite sink is not made of natural stone. It is a composite of quartz sand and resin. Deante states that its granite sinks are resistant to impacts, high temperatures up to 250 °C, stains, and thermal shock according to standard EN 13310, with an 18-year warranty. Granite is quiet and comes in many colours – grey, black, white, or concrete shades. Water stains and light marks from metal pots are visible on dark colours. If you have hard water, consider a lighter shade.

Ceramic sink has a glazed surface, which is the most resistant to scratching and does not absorb stains. It looks luxurious and suits both country and modern kitchens. However, it is heavy – the cabinet and worktop must support it – and the glaze can chip if struck hard against the edge.

Mounting methods

top-mounted on cabinetthe sink is also the top of the cabinetwithout a worktop, on the lower cabinet13 sinks

A top-mounted sink is the simplest and also suits a laminate worktop. When mounted under the worktop, the edge of the cutout remains exposed – a laminate worktop would absorb water there, so only stone, compact, or ceramic worktops are suitable. The cutout size differs for inserted sinks and under-mounted sinks, and is always specified by the manufacturer in the technical sheet. Some sinks can be installed both ways – for example, Deante Momi with a drainer.

Note: the cutout in the worktop should be made by a carpenter or kitchen studio according to the manufacturer's template. Leave the connection of the sink to the waste, taps for water, and dishwashers to a plumber. For under-mounted sinks, the sink must be glued and supported according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Size, compartments, and drainer

The sink is chosen based on the width of the cabinet it fits into. The minimum cabinet width is specified by the manufacturer for each model. For example, Deante Momi with a drainer 440 × 670 mm requires a cabinet at least 45 cm wide, while Deante Evora, Andante, or Corda granite sinks require a cabinet at least 50 cm wide. The stainless steel top-mounted sink Deante Tango 600 × 600 mm is placed on a 60 cm wide cabinet.

1,5 compartmentssmall compartment for rinsing or storage31 sinks
2 compartmentswithout a dishwasher, large kitchen45 sinks

If you have a dishwasher, usually one larger compartment and a drainer is sufficient. The compartment should be large enough to fit the biggest tray or pot you wash by hand. For sinks with a drainer, check if they can be installed on the left or right – depending on where your stove and dishwasher are located.

Drain, waste trap, and tap

  • Drain – sinks have a larger drain than basins, for example, Deante Momi has a 3.5" drain. The waste trap must fit the sink in size.
  • Waste trap with a branch for the dishwasher – it connects the hose from the dishwasher. Keep this in mind when purchasing the sink, not just during installation.
  • Space in the cabinet – the waste trap, rubbish bin, and hoses take up a lot of space. Deante offers a Space-Saver waste trap with some sinks, which leaves more free space in the cabinet.
  • Tap hole – granite and ceramic sinks usually have a hole either punched or prepared for drilling, with a diameter of 35 mm. For under-mounted sinks, the tap is usually on the worktop.

What tap to choose for the sink – a stand-alone, with a spray, or low-pressure for the heater under the sink – we discuss in the article Kitchen tap.

Maintenance

  • Stainless Steel – wipe dry after use, remove limescale with a stainless steel cleaner. Scouring pads and sand will leave scratches.
  • Granite – clean daily with water and detergent, use a gentle cleaner for limescale as per the manufacturer's instructions. Regular wiping is recommended for dark sinks to prevent light stains from settling.
  • Ceramics – just water and detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners to avoid dulling the glaze.
  • Drain – empty the strainer daily and do not pour grease down the sink. If water drains slowly, refer to the guide Blocked Drain for assistance.

How to choose a sink in five steps

  1. Measure the internal width of the cabinet under the sink and compare it with the minimum width in the technical sheet.
  2. Decide on the installation based on the worktop – for laminate from above, for stone also below the countertop.
  3. Choose the material – stainless steel for low cost, granite for a quiet and durable sink, ceramics for the hardest surface.
  4. Select the number of chambers and drain based on whether you have a dishwasher.
  5. Check the drain, waste trap, dishwasher connection, and tap hole.

Common mistakes

  • Sink under the countertop for a laminate worktop.
  • Sink that does not fit in the cabinet – minimum cabinet width has not been verified.
  • Black granite with very hard water without regular wiping.
  • Chamber smaller than the largest plate that is washed by hand.
  • Waste trap without a branch for the dishwasher.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best kitchen sink?

The most commonly chosen is the granite sink – it is quiet, stain and heat resistant. Stainless steel is the cheapest and lightest, while ceramics have the most scratch-resistant surface. Choose based on your worktop, cooking style and budget.

Is a granite sink made of stone?

No. It is a composite of quartz sand and resin. Deante states its resistance to impacts, temperatures up to 250 °C, stains and thermal shock according to standard EN 13310.

Can an under-counter sink be installed with a laminate worktop?

No. The edge of the cutout remains exposed and the laminate would absorb moisture. An under-counter sink is suitable for stone, compact or ceramic worktops. For laminate, choose a top-mounted sink.

How wide should the cabinet under the sink be?

According to the technical sheet of the sink. For example, the Deante Momi with a draining board needs a cabinet at least 45 cm wide, while granite sinks Evora, Andante and Corda need at least 50 cm.

One or two bowls?

With a dishwasher, one larger bowl is sufficient, possibly with a draining board. Two bowls are suitable for kitchens without a dishwasher, and 1.5 bowls are good for rinsing vegetables.

How much does a kitchen sink cost?

On vkupelni.sk, for example, the stainless steel Deante Tango is €65.79, the ceramic Deante Sabor ranges from €216.05 to €272.97, and the granite Deante Momi single bowl is €304.84 (November 2026). In the entire category, sinks range from €37 to €995.
