Bathroom mat: slip-resistant, dries quickly and is washable
A bathroom mat, also called a bath mat, should quickly absorb water from your feet, dry quickly, and not slip on wet tiles. The most common size is 50 × 80 cm for in front of the bath or shower, smaller mats around 50 × 55 cm are suitable for in front of the sink and toilet. Choose a mat with a slip-resistant backing and made from washable material – microfiber and polyester dry faster than thick cotton. For the bath and shower, a different accessory is needed: a rubber mat with suction cups.
The mat is the smallest accessory in the bathroom, yet it is used every day. After a shower, you step onto it with wet feet, so it must quickly absorb water, not slip on the tiles, and dry by evening. In this article, you will find out what size to choose for in front of the bath, shower, and toilet, how materials differ, why the slip-resistant backing is important, how to wash the mat, and how much it costs.
Bath mat or mat for the bath
In stores, you will find two different items under the term mat. The bath mat lies on the floor in front of the bath, shower, or sink. The mat is placed inside the bath or shower tray and protects against slipping while showering.
| Type | Where it belongs | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| bath mat (rug) | on the floor in front of the bath, shower, sink, or WC | absorbent top, slip-resistant bottom, machine washable |
| bath mat | at the bottom of the bath | suction cups on the bottom, rinse after bathing and hang up |
| shower mat | at the bottom of the shower tray | square, smaller than the tray, must not cover the drain |
On vkupelni.sk, for example, there are GEDY GEO mats made of synthetic rubber – for the shower enclosure 53 × 53 cm and for the bath 36 × 71 cm, or transparent and grey GEDY RIVER mats made of PVC. Do not place a mat in level-access showers, as water would stand underneath it – slip-resistant floor tiles, which we discuss in the article Parameters of floor tiles: slip resistance, will help there.
What size of mat
| Location | Size | Example from vkupelni.sk |
|---|---|---|
| in front of the bath or shower enclosure | 50 × 80 cm | GEDY MOUSSE, GEDY FUZZY, AQUALINE |
| in front of a wide enclosure or walk-in | 60 × 90 cm | RIDDER LA OLA, RIDDER COINS |
| in front of the sink or WC | around 50 × 55 cm | RIDDER LA OLA and COINS 55 × 50 cm |
| for the shower tray | 53 to 54 cm | GEDY GEO, GEDY RIVER |
| for the bath | around 36 × 71 cm | GEDY GEO, GEDY RIVER 35 × 70 cm |
The mat in front of the shower should be at least as wide as the entrance to the enclosure, so you step directly onto it from the tray. Place it in front of the bath where you step out of the bath. In a small bathroom, check the door – if it opens inwards, a thick mat must not obstruct the door leaf. The article Small bathroom 2 × 2 m shows how to arrange fixtures in a small space.
Slip-resistant bottom
Smooth floor tiles and wet feet are a combination where you can easily slip. A regular rug without a bottom slides on the tiles, which is why a bathroom mat has a rubber or plastic layer on the underside that holds it in place. This is indicated in the description of products on vkupelni.sk as slip-resistant treatment.
- the bottom should be flexible and full-surface, not just a few points,
- place the mat on dry and clean tiles – it holds worse on wet or greasy floors,
- when the bottom hardens or crumbles after years of washing, replace the mat,
- for seniors, a thinner mat with flat edges is better, as they won't trip over it – more tips can be found in the chapter Barrier-free bathroom for seniors.
Material: which dries quickly
| Material | Properties | Example |
|---|---|---|
| microfiber, polyester | absorbent, soft, dries quickly, easy to wash | GEDY FUZZY (100 % polyester), RIDDER LA OLA |
| memory foam with a textile top | very soft underfoot | GEDY MOUSSE |
| absorbent polyurethane | quickly absorbs water from feet | AQUALINE absorbent mat |
| cotton | pleasant and absorbent, but takes longer to dry | classic terry mats |
| rubber, PVC | water does not penetrate, washes with water | mats for the bath and shower |
For bathrooms without windows or with poor ventilation, choose a thinner microfiber mat – it dries faster and won't start to smell. A thick cotton mat on tiles that have nowhere to dry can retain moisture underneath. We describe how to ventilate the bathroom and what to do about mould in the article Mould in the bathroom.
Washing and drying
- Washing temperature is indicated by the manufacturer on the label – usually 30 or 40 °C. With a slip-resistant base, a tumble dryer is often prohibited as the heat can damage the base.
- How often: once a week to two weeks in the family, less often in the guest bathroom.
- After showering do not leave the mat lying wet – drape it over the edge of the bath or on the heated towel rail to dry the underside as well.
- Bath mats should be rinsed after bathing, wipe the suction cups, and hang the mat up. Water can accumulate under a mat that remains on the bottom of the bath, leading to mould.
- Two mats for alternating use are practical – one is washed while the other is in the bathroom.
For drying towels and mats, a heated towel rail or electric dryer is suitable – see Heated towel rail for the bathroom.
Mat and underfloor heating
A mat on underfloor heating partially dampens the heat from the floor. A thin mat is fine, but a thick mat with a solid rubber base over a large area retains heat. If you have underfloor heating, look for a description indicating that the mat is suitable for underfloor heating, and opt for a smaller size just in front of the shower or bath. More about underfloor heating can be found in the article Underfloor heating in the bathroom.
Colour and style
A mat is the cheapest way to add colour to the bathroom. In a white bathroom, a bold coloured mat acts as an accent, while in a dark bathroom, a light mat brightens the floor. Grey and anthracite shades show dirt less, while white looks the cleanest but needs to be washed more often. Match the mat with towels or the colour of the fittings – inspiration can be found in the articles White bathroom and Black and dark bathroom.

Frequently Asked Questions
What bathroom mat to choose?
Absorbent mat with a slip-resistant backing that is washable. Microfiber and polyester dry faster than thick cotton. The most common size for in front of the bath or shower is 50 × 80 cm.
What size mat to place in front of the shower?
At least as wide as the entrance to the cubicle – usually 50 × 80 cm, for a wider cubicle or walk-in 60 × 90 cm. A smaller mat around 50 × 55 cm is sufficient in front of the sink and toilet.
Why does the mat slip in the bathroom?
It lacks a slip-resistant backing, the backing has hardened after washing, or it lies on wet or greasy floor tiles. Choose a mat with a full slip-resistant backing and place it on a dry floor.
How to wash a bathroom mat?
According to the manufacturer's label, usually at 30 or 40 °C. With a slip-resistant backing, tumble drying is often prohibited. After washing and after a shower, hang the mat to dry the underside as well.
Can the mat be used on underfloor heating?
Yes, but a thick mat with a solid rubber backing dampens the heat from the floor. Choose a thinner mat that the manufacturer indicates as suitable for underfloor heating, and only for in front of the shower or bath.
Can the mat be left in the bath all the time?
Preferably not. Water gets trapped under a mat with suction cups and mould can develop. Rinse it after bathing, wipe the suction cups and hang it up.
